Sick, Homeless, and Hungry

I'm in Las Vegas right now and headed out this afternoon to shoot some of the casinos. I ran across this young man on the pedestrian bridge between the Tropicana Hotel and the MGM Grand. His sign reads "Sick, Homeless, and Hungry!!! Any help is very appreciated. Thank you and God Bless."

I was really struck by the contrast of huge hotels, people with ostentatious jewelry, and then this man with (apparently) nothing. The worst part--for the minute or so I stood there taking in the scenery, absolutely no one stopped to help--including myself. That, and not his poverty and homelessness, is the true tragedy in this situation--that we're so hardened to it that we can just walk by without a second glance.

Another photo tomorrow...

I always give money. I have received a lot of criticism for that from friends; they say they will only use it for booze. I don't care. After a long day outside, I would want a drink. After a long day of work, I often want a drink. Am I a better person because I can afford it?

I have spent a lot of time with people who are homeless, taking pictures. I have often found them, in spite of the mental illness that many have, much more interesting and much nicer than the so called "normal" (but very unhappy and angry) people you run into during the course of a day.

Thanks for the pics!

Very sad really. In the city of "more" this is a stark reminder that there are still those that have "less". Bless him.

I get your point, rubink and Gerry, but I gotta go with Neo on this...the guy did actually look pretty healthy--like he just decided to sleep there. Having said that, I did see a lot of people in worse shape than this guy, and those are the ones I felt most sorry for.

To paraphrase rubink slightly--bless them all.

Points well taken, but I would think that there may be something that is not obvious "upstairs" that could be the problem. Whether there is something wrong or not, yes, I say. Bless them all.
